over serpents (see Gen. 1:28). Adam was the divine ambassador commissioned to rule the earth under God’s authority and on his behalf. Adam’s third purpose on earth focused on family obligations. Adam was to be the head of his household, as implied by his being created first and by the naming of his wife, as he had expressed his leadership of the animals by naming them.3 These latter two offices should probably be seen as aspects of his priestly duty: he was to rule the earth for God’s glory, and
